Dr. Michelle Novotny, PsyD - Licensed Psychologist in California

My Background

My clinical training has been focused on children, adolescents, couples, and families, as I am deeply interested in development and how the systems in our lives impact our choices and perspectives.

In graduate school at the University of Denver, I worked with clients facing a variety of issues including life cycle transitions, anxiety, depression, and relationship concerns. My post-doctoral studies at Catholic Charities of Denver allowed me to incorporate spirituality into therapy, working with individuals, couples, and families ranging in age from 3 to 80 years old. It was a wonderful opportunity to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

I currently practice in California, where I work primarily with teenagers (13-17), young adults (18-24), and adults (25-64). My approach integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) techniques, tailored to each client's unique needs and goals.

I have also studied attachment family therapy and am currently deepening my training in Internal Family Systems, a powerful approach for understanding and healing the different parts of ourselves that develop in response to life experiences.

My Approach to Therapy

Understanding and Growth

I believe in helping people understand the systems and patterns that shape their experiences. Therapy is most effective when we explore how our relationships, development, and life contexts influence who we are.

Evidence-Based Approaches

I use proven therapeutic methods including CBT, Internal Family Systems, and Mindfulness-Based therapy, while remaining flexible and responsive to what works best for you.

Compassionate & Non-Judgmental

My office is a safe space where you can explore difficult thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. Vulnerability takes courage, and I honor that courage with genuine compassion and respect.

Developmentally Informed

My training in developmental psychology helps me understand the unique challenges people face at different life stages, from adolescence through adulthood.
